Embodied Land
2023
Embodied Land (2023) was made during a residency with La Wayaka Current in Coyo, Chile.
This work developed through time spent in the dry riverbeds and volcanic landscape of the Atacama Desert, and alongside members of the Lickan Antay community learning from their rituals and way of being with the landscape. I shaped locally gathered clay into sculptures incorporating found plant material and coca leaves. The works respond to the scarcity of water in the landscape, and their surfaces carry marks from the materials.
The work was exhibited at Casa Cultural La Yareta in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile, and subsequently developed further through Landscapes of Hope.
