Utopian Dreams

Utopian Dreams

2020

Escaping the Confines (2020) is part of a body of work made from reclaimed materials discarded in artist studios. It is built from a reclaimed stool, reclaimed plastic, packaging tape, cardboard and paint, stacked, wrapped, taped up and layered, and stands 190 cm tall. I made it in response to seeing tape used to mend broken parts of cities, such as on the Underground, and also to control how people moved through space during the pandemic in 2020.

Utopian Dreams (2020) belongs to the same body of work. It draws on utopian architecture, like the pink apartment blocks of La Muralla Roja in Spain, and it also looks like a novelty drinking straw.
